The BMW 2000 Was a Game Changer for the Brand

From Road & Track

In an effort to speed up recovery following the end of World War II, BMW introduced the New Class of cars. Beginning in 1962 with the four-door 1500 and continuing with the 1600, 1800, and 2000, the German automaker established itself as a manufacturer of luxurious sports sedans.

But it wasn't until the 2000C came along in 1965 that BMW had a New Class coupe in its lineup. Not everyone is a fan of the styling, but owner Emin Kureghian still loves his. As he sees it, the 2000C is the bridge between the New Class and the iconic 2002. "It's kind of a hybrid between the 02 and the newer coupes. It's got lines from both-if you take a good look, you can see both sides of the story," he tells Petrolicious.

Amazingly, while the car's been cleaned up, it's in entirely original condition. While he'd like to take it back to its original color, Kureghian continues to use it as his daily driver. Even if it's not always so reliable.

"You picture, back in '69, the guy that got in here, i mean, he had the coat and tie, thin cigarette in his mouth and driving this luxurious thing-to him, it was a Bentley of the time," says Kureghian. "Today, I get in, slam the door shut, turn it on, step on the gas; it's not going anywhere and I have a laugh."

But when you love a car, it takes more than a little frustration to make you give up on it. Especially when it's as iconic as the BMW 2000C. As Kureghian puts it, "the fact that it pulled [BMW] out of a sales slump is really something, like a whole new generation. Almost like the E30 of its generation."
