BMW Announces Technology-Rich, Plug-in Hybrid 740e xDrive iPerformance
This month, BMW will begin selling a plug-in hybrid version of its 2017 7 Series large premium sedan in the United States. The BMW 740e xDrive iPerformance may be one of the most advanced “green” large luxury cars on the market, according to the automaker. It is powered by BMW’s turbocharged gasoline engine in combination with an electric motor integrated with the car’s 8-speed transmission, and has a starting price of $90,095, including handling and destination charges.
BMW’s latest iPerformance model relies on a plug-in hybrid drive system that features the automaker’s twin-turbocharged 4-cylinder gasoline engine and an electric motor that is integrated into the car’s 8-speed Steptronic transmission to produce 322 horsepower with 369 lb.-ft. of torque. Intelligent all-wheel drive distributes power to the front and rear wheels. BMW reports that the gasoline engine alone produces 255 horsepower and 295 lb.-ft. of torque. With combined power, the new 740e xDrive iPerformance accelerates from 0-60 mph in 5.1 seconds, according to BMW. The German luxury sports car maker also says the top speed of the new 740e xDrive iPerformance is a limited 155 mph.
One of many special features in this BMW plug-in hybrid is that all operating settings—including modes for combined or all-electric power—can be controlled with an eDrive button on the center console. In addition, the new iPerformance model has a driving dynamics switch that can select dynamic, comfort, or efficiency driving settings.
The latest eDrive model features a lighter body structure that uses carbon and plastic with electrical components including a Lithium-ion high-voltage battery with charging dynamics that focus on advanced efficiency, BMW says. In all-electric mode, for example, the 740e xDrive iPerformance can reach 75 mph, the company asserts. Combined fuel economy for the new BMW plug-in is 64 MPGe and an all-electric driving range is 14 miles, based on EPA estimates.
BMW points out that this particular car has a unique environmental heritage with sustainability as a core value from development through selection of materials such as the use of carbon fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP) through manufacturing, vehicle life on the road, to when the vehicle completes its life cycle.
