We should start out by saying that the car you see pictured above is not technically a BMW i8. It's a "silhouette car," with a tube-frame chassis and custom bodywork made to somewhat resemble the i8 you can buy at your BMW dealer. It also ditches the i8's innovative hybrid drivetrain. And it's incredibly cool.

The i8 GTR, as it's called, is the creation of Belgian team Hamofa Motorsport and it is all kinds of rad. Mainly because it looks cool, and because it has a naturally aspirated 4.0-liter V8 from a BMW Z4 GTE race car. That engine-which was derived from the V8 used in the E92 M3 road car- puts out around 550 hp and only has a little over 2400 lbs to push around. This is likely to be one quick racer.

This car was entered in its first race last month at Circuit Zolder, where it was driven by three brothers, Rob, Kris and Mark Veerhoven. Unfortunately, they didn't finish, but they probably had the coolest car on the grid. And certainly one of the sweetest sounding.
