The BMW i8 Will Reportedly Get More Power and Range

From Road & Track

Details are still scarce, but it appears the BMW i8's mid-cycle refresh will include quite a few improvements. Most importantly, it will be getting more power.

Despite using a modified version of the three-cylinder engine found in the base Mini Cooper, the i8 is already quite quick. It will hit 60 mph in less than four seconds, and as we found in our road test, "the i8's combination of torque, traction, and agility are astounding."

But few cars can't be improved with the addition of some extra power, and if Autocar's sources at BMW are correct, the facelifted i8 will get about a 10-percent boost in power. But the added power won't come from the engine. No, it will reportedly come from improved electric motors.

Combined with improved transmission programming, you can expect the i8 to be noticeably quicker. There's also a good chance the i8 will get a larger battery to go along with a host of visual changes, as well as chassis and suspension improvements.

BMW is also reportedly working on adding inductive charging capability to the refreshed i8. If it's included, it would allow drivers to recharge the car's batteries without plugging it into the wall.

Expect the updated i8 to go on sale late next year alongside a roadster version.
