The BMW M4 CSL was the ultimate expression of the current G82 model lineup, with the track-focused entry limited to just 1000 units globally. The four-door M3 never got the track enhancement package that its two-door sibling received, or at least until now. Thanks to the tuning gurus at Lightweight Performance in Sinn, Germany, we have a pretty good idea as to what that sort of build would’ve looked like. Better yet, the CSL-inspired M3 in question was based on a Touring model.

While not as well known on this side of the Atlantic, Lightweight Performance is known in Europe for their track-capable BMW builds. This particular project started life as a modern M3 Touring model, which then underwent a series of visual and hardware adjustments. These start with the new suspension system from Eibach, which lowers the front of the car nearly an inch. The rear ride height was deemed appropriate from the factory, and was therefore left alone. Bolstering that setup is a set of 21-inch wheels at all four corners, upsized from the 19- and 20-inch units on the genuine CSL. The team also fitted the BMW with a custom exhaust system, complete with silencers, HJS downpipes, and carbon exhaust tips. The system brings a bit more volume to the M3 without bringing things to an obnoxious level. The system also meets the stringent sound and particulate regs in Europe. Total output is said to be up by around 15 hp. From the factory, the M3 is rated at 503 horsepower and 479 lb-ft of torque. The M4 CSL ups the output to 549 hp.

In order to give this M3 a proper CSL look, the team went heavy on the carbon fiber accents. These include a new carbon front lip, rear diffuser, and rear spoiler blade package. The team also managed to source a genuine CSL front clip from the BMW parts shelf, bringing the unique grille surrounds, hood scoop, and badging. Even the yellow lighting elements are carried over from the CSL.

While a wagon variant doesn’t necessarily fit with the idea behind the CSL models, this particular build is pretty exciting to behold. The love of fast wagons isn’t going away, even if the M3 Touring is forbidden fruit on this side of the pond.
