Yahoo Autos BMW Might Be Cooking Up a Lighter, Faster Version of the M2
When BMW released the new M3/M4 in 2014, we knew faster, crazier versions were coming. Why? Well, BMW has offered special editions of every M3 it's ever built, dating back to the original E30. This generation proved to be no exception with the launch of the Competition Package and the wonderful M4 GTS.
Unfortunately, there's no such precedent with the M2, a model that never existed before. But it seems like the folks at BMW's M division have bigger plans for the muscular little coupe.
German magazine Auto Sport und Motor reports that BMW has started work on a lighter, more powerful version of the M2, possibly to be called the M2 GTS or M2 CSL. The changes over the standard M2 apparently include lighter carbon fiber body panels, more aggressive aero, and a bump in horsepower from 360 to around 400.
While a more hardcore M2 isn't yet confirmed, it wouldn't be much of a surprise from BMW. The German automaker already offers some form of higher-performance upgrade for every M car (save for the X5 M and X6 M), so at minimum, a "Competition Package" for the M2 feels inevitable.
We're not going to get too excited until we get official word from BMW, but the possibility of a M2 GTS is particularly intriguing. The regular M2 and the M4 GTS are our two favorite M cars currently. Combining the traits of those two into one super-performance coupe sounds like a fantastic idea.
