BMW's Latest Art Car Livery Is Just a Picture of Itself

From Road & Track

It's been six years since BMW commissioned the 2010 M3 GT2 Art Car. Designed by Jeff Koons as a tribute to Andy Warhol's 1979 Art Car, it debuted in Paris before competing in 24 Hours of LeMans. This week, BMW premiered its newest Art Car-an M6 GTLM wearing a picture of itself.

Designed by conceptual artist John Baldessari, this is the 19th Art Car that BMW has commissioned (the 18th if you don't count the 2009 Z4 that Robin Rhode used to create art on a canvas). And, well, the art here is definitely conceptual.

The roof is covered by a large dot, while the left side simply says "FAST." On the right side of the car, it wears a photo of itself. If that's confusing, perhaps Baldessari can clarify for you:

I like the ambiguity, having two-dimension and three-dimension at the same time. Considering the car as an icon of contemporary life, my concept turned out playfully satirical, but it also highlights some of the trademark ideas that I use. So you can say, the BMW Art Car is definitely a typical Baldessari and the fastest artwork I ever created!

Exactly.

Look for Baldessari's Art Car to compete in January's Rolex 24 at Daytona.
