This Brand New Open-Wheeler Is the 1970s Formula Car of Your Dreams

From Road & Track

If you thought open-wheelers with huge air scoops, wide racing slicks, and naturally aspirated V8s were reserved for just display purposes and historic events, think again. Formula 5000, a defunct racing series for low-cost teams in the '70s and '80s, is back from the dead, and its bringing its cars with it.

The new Series, called Formula Thunder 5000, will be held in Australia and New Zealand (because of course it is), as a seven-round summer championship. The organizers, led by former Australian Touring Car Championship privateer Chris Lambden, hope to re-create the original F5000 series by retaining the original car's general layout and character. That means an open-wheeled 1970's F1-looking racecar with a naturally aspirated, 570-horsepower 5.0-liter V8 and a total weight of just 1500 pounds. Yes, we're interested.

According to the Formula Thunder 5000 Facebook page, the organizers have just successfully shaken down its first prototype, in preparation of the inaugural 2017/18 season ahead. If you're tired of tiny turbo-V6 motors and cars that can't be pushed to the limit, this might just be the racing series for you.
