Bugatti Will Remove Your Chiron's Speed Limiter If You Want to Do 285 MPH

From Road & Track

When the Bugatti Chiron was unveiled, we were a little surprised to learn that the 1500 horsepower monster wasn't going to automatically be the fastest car in the world. See, we had heardrumors that the top speed of Bugatti's supercar was 288 mph, but it was announced that the top speed would be an electronically limited 261 mph. Yes, that's faster than you need, but it's not as fast as we had hoped.

Thankfully, Bugatti knows this and has a fix for those of you that just need to go faster: In an interview with Autoblog, Dr. Willi Neutschil said that the company can disable the 261 mph limiter so the Chiron can hit a top speed of 285 mph, nearly the 288 rumor we had heard. He also notes that there are very few places in the world that the top speed can be achieved, mainly because of the exceedingly long braking distances. But it can be done.

Other tidbits? Well, the average Bugatti owner isn't using his car as a second, third, or even fourth car. A Veyron/Chiron is usually entering a garage that has an average of 42 cars in it. That's not a typo. Bugattis also aren't driven very far each year, with just 1,600 miles going on the cars every twelve months. The highest mileage customer Veyron has 24,800 miles on it, while Bugatti's development car has 55,800 miles on the clock. Crazy.
