If you're in the market for a vintage Le Mans race car (who isn't, these days?), and want something a little different, why not consider this ultra-rare Alpine A220? According to the seller, its one of just five in existence, raced in-period as a works entry for Alpine in the 1968 and 1969 24 Hours of Le Mans.

Welcome to You Must Buy, our daily look at the cars you really should be buying instead of that boring commuter sedan.

The A220 was an evolution of the the company's A210, equipped with a mid-mounted 290-horsepower 3.0-liter V8 connected to the rear wheels via a five-speed manual transmission. The cars were largely unsuccessful in competition, but does that really matter now? Just look at it.

This particular example underwent a meticulous 20-year restoration from 1984 to 2004 by its owner at the time, former Alpine chassis designer Jean Pierre Buirette. According to the sellers, William I'Anson Ltd, this is the only Alpine A220 registered to drive on the road. It also comes with a spare gearbox housing and all the body panels necessary to convert it to longtail specification.

The selling dealer doesn't list an asking price on its site, but considering the racing history and rarity, don't expect it to be cheap.
