Cadillac Kills Off the CT6 Plug-In Hybrid, Its Only Electrified Vehicle

From Car and Driver

The plug-in-hybrid version of Cadillac's CT6 luxury sedan will no longer be offered in the U.S. as of the 2019 model year, Cadillac has confirmed to Car and Driver. While other CT6 models received a refresh for 2019-including a new V-8–powered V-series variant-Cadillac says that it will no longer produce the CT6 plug-in for North America. This leaves the General Motors luxury brand without a single electrified vehicle, as the CT6 was its only hybrid offering after the ELR plug-in hybrid was killed off in 2016.

Built in China, the CT6 plug-in hybrid was imported to the United States in small numbers for both the 2017 and 2018 model years. It carried a starting price of $76,090 and effectively fit in between the CT6's four-cylinder and V-6 engine options in power output, with its turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder mated with two electric motors making a total of 335 horsepower. In our testing, it went from zero to 60 mph in 5.2 seconds and achieved an observed electric highway driving range of 33 miles, beating its EPA-rated range by two miles.

Cadillac was already coming up shorthanded in terms of the numbers of hybrid and electric offerings compared to other luxury brands, and now it's entirely without any sort of plug-in vehicle. Volvo, BMW, Mercedes-Benz, and Audi, meanwhile, each offer several different plug-in-hybrid options; and all of them either already sell or are soon to release all-electric models.

A Cadillac spokesperson did confirm to C/D that electrified Cadillacs will be coming soon as part of GM's plan to release 20 new electrified vehicles by 2023. However, it's clear that the brand will be playing catch-up in the alternative-fuel race. We don't know for sure what form these new hybrid or electric models will take, but we do know that upcoming new Cadillac models include a CT5 sedan to go up against the BMW 3-series and an XT6 three-row crossover; it seems possible that either of these vehicles could offer a hybrid variant in the near future.
