Cadillac Unveils 2017 CT6 Plug-in Hybrid Sedan with Less Range Anxiety

Cadillac this week showed off its first CT6 plug-in hybrid (PHEV) midsize premium sedan that will reach dealer showrooms next spring. The new sedan will go the distance with a total range of more than 400 miles, according to the Detroit-based luxury automaker. It’s expected that the new Cadillac electric hybrid, which has a suggested retail price of $75,090 (before electric vehicle tax incentives), will also achieve an estimated 65 MPGe on the road, the company says.

Acceleration from 0-60 mph will take 5.2 seconds, Cadillac says, matching the performance of similar full-size models with V-6 powertrains. The all-electric range for the CT6 plug-in hybrid is estimated at 30 miles. Combined with an efficient engine and battery pack, driving range reaches more than 400 miles before refueling and recharge, according to Cadillac.

Cadillac President Johan de Nysschen said the CT6 is the lightest car in its segment, which makes it an ideal platform for electrification. The 2017 CT6 PHEV employs an all-new rear-wheel-drive (RWD) electric variable transmission. A 2-motor EVT system is combined with a turbocharged, 2.0-liter 4-cylinder gasoline engine to generate 335 total horsepower (250 kW) and 432 lb.-ft. of torque.

Each electric motor in the CT6 Plug-in Hybrid produces 100 horsepower (74.5 kW), and the car is capable of 30 miles of driving range in all-electric mode with a top speed of 78 mph, Cadilla says. Adding oomph from the gasoline engine gives the car a total range of close to 400 miles and a top speed of 150 mph when tested on the track, according to a statement from Cadillac. The plug-in hybrid CT6 includes a full range of standard advanced-technology features, such as a rear-seat infotainment system, enhanced night vision, and rear camera mirror.
