I Can't Believe Toyota Is Calling This Supra the "Wasabi Concept"

If you're disappointed by the looks of the standard-issue 2020 Toyota Supra and want something a bit spicier, Toyota has just the concept for you. The company just brought out what it's calling the GR Supra "Wasabi" Concept at SEMA this year.

We're not making that name up. The line of thinking seems to be that the Supra Wasabi Concept is hotter than the standard car and, well, green. The plant is also Japanese, though they're still some debate within the car community about whether or not the Supra is. Point being, it's not hard to see how the automaker got the name idea.

The most noticeable differences are outside, where the Supra Wasabi Concept gets bright green paint, a huge spoiler and upgraded forged aluminum wheels. Toyota says that a reworked exhaust, now in the center, promises a "deep, throaty exhaust note that will resonate with enthusiasts."

Underneath, the Supra Wasabi Concept has adjustable Öhlins Road & Track (no relation) coil-over suspension. Michelin Pilot Sport 4S tires are at all four corners, a slight improvement over the older Pilot Super Sports tires that come on standard Supras. Brakes are upgraded, too, with two-piece 405-mm rotors up front and 380-mm rotors in the back. The company is hoping to gauge demand for aftermarket parts with its SEMA concepts, so there's a chance some of these upgrades will be available in the future.

Interestingly, despite the aspirational name, the powertrain is the same medium-hot setup as in the standard Supra. You're still getting 335 horsepower, which makes the Supra Wasabi Concept even less spicy than the Z4 with which it shares its platform.

If "Wasabi Supra" sounds oddly familiar, you may be thinking of the wild, flame-spitting 2800-hp MkIV Supra we've previously covered. These are not the same car, obviously. But they are both Wasabi Supras, strangely enough. The SEMA concept car might not have thousands of horsepower, but it is definitely more green.

The Wasabi concept also isn't even the hottest Supra on display at SEMA this year. The GR Supra HyperBoost Edition, another concept built by Toyota for SEMA, harks back to modified MKIV Supras with a heavy tune bringing power to over 500 hp on the stock block.

If that's not enough, Toyota also showed off a GR Supra HyperBoost Edition that makes over 750 horsepower. With that much power and an ultra-aggressive wide-body kit, we'd argue it's a lot spicier than the Supra Wasabi.

If you're mainly looking for body modifications, Toyota's also showing off the Supra 3000GT Concept and Supra Performance Line Concept. For a full breakdown of the deluge of Supra models at SEMA 2019, check out Car and Driver's writeup.
