These Are The Cars You Are Waiting To Turn 25

When we asked which cars you’re waiting to turn 25, a few commenters expressed their disinterest in the ever-popular and impressive imported Nissan GTRs that reach eye-watering prices in the U.S. market, and focused more on Euro cars and Mexican-market cars which was refreshing.

Another common sentiment was apprehension with importing grey market cars due to the challenges that arise when doing maintenance or repairs on these foreigners. This is a hypothetical, y’all. I certainly ain’t importing anything anytime soon but it’s fun to dream!

None. I only have to wait 15 years in Canada. That said the Alpine A110 will be available to import in 2032.

Smart Roadster

In 2027, we can get the Smart Roadster. Mid-mengine, rear wheel drive, under 1,800 pound curb weight, removable hard top. They were notoriously unreliable, which just means that any survivors have been treated very well and had their problems sorted out. And I’m pretty sure a GR Corolla engine would fit back there...

EP3 Honda Civic Type R

UK production of the EP3 Civic Type R began in 2001. When these become legal to import to the US, the price is going to inflate. The Si variant of this Civic is a very polarizing car in the American Honda community, but most people agree that the Type R variant is gold.

The third-generation Volkswagon Scirocco. I had a beat-up 1986 Scirocco for my first car and I loved that thing. It was a mess, but fun as hell to drive. Kept it until it was nearly dead and gave it to a friend who drove it for another year or so until the engine block cracked. I saw a bunch of the new ones when I visited Germany, and I’d grab one in a heartbeat if they were available here in the States.

I’ve decided that I will be importing a Probox as soon as they’re legal. I feel like these are going to be extremely popular imports, too, since they’re dirt cheap and everywhere in Japan.

Well I’m in Canada... so I only have to wait until they turn 15.

Now having said that, for me it’s the VW XL1:

I find it really interesting from a technical, style and aerodynamics perspective.

It’s a shame VW limited production to just 250 units. In my opinion, VW should have kept production going as long as the orders were coming in and there was enough of an order backlog.

But who am I kidding... by the time these turn 15, they’ll be insanely expensive collector items. As it stands, if you want one right now, you’ll have to pay a 6-figure amount in Euros.

The Evo 6.5 Tommi Makinen edition, one of the most hardcore Evo generations, or the even rarer Zero Fighter Evo 6. Better grab them before the other Americans raise the pricing like they do with everything, looking at you GTR!

Jaguar XF Sportbrake (In Canada)

I only have to wait 10 years or so at this point, but we didn’t get the XF Sportbrake in Canada. It’d be more rational to just get an F Pace and not wait (they’re plentiful enough and already starting to get cheaper), but that’s just not as pretty.

I’d love a Daihatsu Copen. Or a Honda S660. A Mercedes Benz CLS Shooting Brake would satisfy most of my Euro cravings.

I have no interest in really anything JDM other than maybe the Figaro or a manual Sera, but I’m really excited for some of the late-90s to mid-2000s Alfas to come of age. I don’t see them being super expensive and more obscure since they didn’t get video game exposure here like Skylines and others did. Saw my first 1995-ish Alfa GTV in the US on a trailer not too long ago and it got me so excited, I’d love to see a later model one or a Brera in a few years.

Turns out the VW Caddy Maxi didn’t come out until ‘07. I’ll just have to wait. And probably move out of California.
