Capitalizing on the Chevrolet Colorado pickup truck's long list of customizations, for 2019 Chevy is borrowing some burlier bits from costlier versions and offering them on cheaper trims.

The mid-size pickup receives two new option packages to tempt buyers who want a ZR2 with that sweet spare tire in the bed or the stenciled CHEVROLET grille of the ZR2 Bison but can't afford either of those. The first, the Z71 Trail Runner, adds the ZR2's aluminum skid plates, rock rails, and 17-inch Goodyear Wrangler DuraTrac tires. The regular Z71's retuned suspension and locking rear differential remain, while the standard chromed bow-tie grille is replaced with the Bison's blacked-out design.

Next is the RST, an appearance package similar to those offered on Tahoe, Suburban, and Silverado models. Available on the LT trim, the RST package also brings the Bison grille but doesn't add any usable off-road upgrades. Instead, it includes a black strip along the lower door moldings, black RST badges, a black bow tie on the tailgate, and the Colorado's only 20-inch wheels.

Pricing for both packages is not yet available, but expect the RST to mirror the $2725 upcharge for an LT Redline Special Edition and the Trail Runner to run near the $2995 price of the Z71 Midnight Edition. If that's too dear, Chevrolet offers two extra skid plates on both Z71 and LT trucks for $375. The Bison grille is now a dealer-installed accessory for $395.

Not every Colorado part is separately available. The longer-travel spool-valve dampers, 3.5-inch-wider track, two-inch lift, chassis reinforcements, and locking front differential are ZR2-exclusive items. Chevrolet does not want you aping the ZR2's optional rally bar or the Bison's steel bumpers on any lesser Colorado, so prepare to pay well above $40,000-the Bison won't go on sale until January-for those privileges.
