Chevy Camaro Beats Ford Mustang...

From Road & Track

The Mustang vs. Camaro rivalry is one of the oldest and most heated in the automotive world. Loyalties are fierce, and the parameters of victory are myriad: 0-60 times, quarter-mile performance, horsepower, torque, price.

Notch one up for the Camaro, though: In the month of September, it out-sold the Mustang for the first time in almost two years.

That victory is due in part to a startling slump in Mustang sales-so bad, Ford idled its Flat Rock, Michigan assembly plant for a week. Mustang production is scheduled to resume October 17th.

But keep that Chevy victory lap short-on annual sales, Ford is still winning, having moved 87,258 Mustangs in the U.S. this year. Despite a 9.3-percent drop in sales compared to this time last year, Ford's numbers still beat the Camaro's sales of 54,535 so far this year, down 11 percent from this point in 2015.

And the Camaro's sales win is a drop in the bucket compared to days gone by: Mustangs outsold Camaros for 24 years straight, a trend that was only reversed with the reintroduction of the Chevy in 2010, though not permanently.

Of course, there's a reason for all this: With the end of the model year looming, Camaros are carrying an average discount of $3409 per car, nearly triple the incentive available two months ago. Meanwhile, Mustangs carry an average incentive of $2602.

But it's all about getting buyers in cars. Pony car fans vote with their checkbooks, and right now, the Camaro is the winner.

At least for the month of September.
