Chevy Will Debut the 10-Second 2017 COPO Camaro at SEMA

From Road & Track

You know how Dodge has the Drag Pak Challengers and Ford has the Mustang Cobra Jets? Well, GM has the COPO Camaro for that exact same reason: Accelerating in a straight line very quickly indeed. Or at least faster than any Drag Pak Dodge or Cobra Jet Ford around.

For 2017's updated track-only factory Camaro drag racer, Chevy started by upgrading the stock Camaro SS with a cam-and-heads package good for about 600 horses. Then, they went on testing it adding a higher-stall torque converter, ZL1 half-shafts and driveshaft, and the beefier Gen 5 ZL1 driveline upgrade with a strong 3.73 rear differential in a solid axle built for drag launches.

Only 69 COPO Camaros will be built for 2017, available with either a supercharged 5.7-liter, direct-injection 6.2, or naturally-aspirated 7.0-liter V8. All three engines hook up to an ATI TH400 three-speed automatic.

With these modifications, Chevy recorded best performances that include a 60-foot time of 1.425 seconds, a 1/8th-mile time of 6.764 seconds at 100.85 mph and a 1/4-mile time of 10.685 seconds at 125.73 mph. Not bad for a work in progress.

Chevy is still testing and tuning, evaluating which of these parts might be included in the final product. But their air induction and exhaust systems, as well as a "small" brake system that will fit 16-inch drag wheels sure sound like the options you want to on your drag car. Plus the parachute.
