  • Chevrolet has received over 110,000 reservations for the 2024 Silverado EV, scheduled to arrive in the spring of 2023 with a $39,900 starting price.

  • The Silverado EV will be available in a variety of trims, offering a top range of approximately 400 miles and 664 hp.

  • The 2024 Chevrolet Silverado EV is expected to compete with the Ford F-150 Lightning, which will enter production about a year ahead of it, and in higher-spec trims with the more lifestyle-oriented Rivian R1T.

It's only been a few weeks since GM took the wraps off the Chevrolet Silverado EV, slated to become the brand's first electric pickup and the second for General Motors after the GMC Hummer SUT. But the battery-electric truck, scheduled to arrive next year, has already racked up over 110,000 reservations, the automaker reported this week. This includes orders from more than 240 fleet operators alone.

The Silverado EV will be based on the Ultium battery and drivetrain, with the first two vehicles to use this platform having entered production in the closing months of 2021. The Cadillac Lyriq will follow later this year, ahead of the start of Silverado EV production in 2023.

"We are converting a plant in Orion Township, Michigan, to EV truck production to help provide us with a total of 600,000 units of EV truck capacity in North America by the end of 2025," the automaker added.

The Silverado EV will offer a range of up to 400 miles when optioned with the largest 200-kWh battery, while also serving up 664 hp and 780 lb-ft of torque in the dual-motor RST First Edition trim. Among other things, this version of the Silverado will also offer up to 1300 lbs of payload capacity and 10,000 towing capacity, in addition to 0-60 mph launches in under 4.5 seconds.

Chevrolet will offer the truck in three main flavors early on, including the top-spec Rally Sport Truck trim, off-road-oriented Trail Boss trim, and the more businesslike Work Truck with a more modest 510 hp on tap. The latter will start at $39,900 before destination charges, while the top-spec RST First Edition will effectively compete with its GMC Hummer SUT sibling with a $105,000 sticker. Other trims will fill out the lineup as production gets going.

The Silverado EV's main competitor in Work Truck trim is expected to be the Ford F-150 Lightning, which will have a nearly identical starting price but will have entered production a year earlier, starting in just a couple of months.

Rivian's R1T is expected to stay a pricier lifestyle offering while the Tesla Cybertruck, delayed until 2023 at the earliest, may have some issues appealing to the working truck buyer demographic that has traditionally bought pickups from the likes of Ford, Chevy, and Ram in the past.

Speaking of demand for electric pickups, GM may soon find itself having to work to boost production for the truck, like Ford, which was deluged with F-15o Lightning reservations and had to almost double the planned annual production capacity. GM is already working on turning its production capacity toward Ultium platform battery-electric models from several brands, including models that we haven't seen yet.

"In late 2021, we opened Factory ZERO in Detroit and Hamtramck, our first plant dedicated to Ultium products, including the GMC Hummer EV," the automaker noted. "We are simultaneously converting other plants, with EV production in Tennessee and Canada beginning this year, and a plant in Mexico coming online next year."
