Yahoo Autos The Chiron Will Not Be Bugatti's Last ICE-Powered Car
It's been over six months since Croatian EV supercar company Rimac took over Bugatti in a deal with Volkswagen and Porsche. Since then, we've been curious about the future of the newly formed "Bugatti-Rimac" firm. A pivot to purely electric drivetrains seems imminent, but according to CEO Mate Rimac, it won't come as soon as we think.
In a video published to Bugatti's website recapping the company's 2021, Rimac says he's "pushing for a combustion engine" on the company's future product, claiming that there is in fact a future for the internal combustion engine at Bugatti. Pretty surprising to hear that, considering his own company is fully dedicated to electric powertrains.
That means the Chiron, as well as the Chiron-based limited-production cars such as the Divo and Centodieci, won't be the last ICE-powered cars to leave the Bugatti factory. Instead, it'll be a car that has yet to be revealed.
What we don't know is whether Bugatti plans to retain its iconic 8.0-liter quad-turbo W16 engine, which has been in production in one form or another since the Veyron's introduction in 2005, going forward. It's likely that any new Bugatti model introduced following the Chiron will have some sort of hybrid assistance, however. If that means the company is able to keep the mighty 16-cylinder powerplant around, we're all for it.
