Chris Harris Samples the Aston Martin V12 Vantage S and Porsche 911 R

From Road & Track

The manual transmission has experienced a nice renaissance in 2016. Modern dual-clutch and automatic transmissions shift quicker than any human could on their own, but don't offer the same level of driver involvement. That's why the Porsche 911 R and Aston Martin V12 Vantage S ditched their autos in favor of three pedals and a stick.

Top Gear's Chris Harris got both of these sports cars together for a test on road and track to determine which one was the best. Unfortunately, this isn't a piece of useful consumer advice since the 911 R sold out before it debuted, and Aston is only making 100 stick-shift V12 Vantages for U.S. consumption.

But, who cares? They're arguably two of the greatest sports cars to arrive this year, and we should celebrate the fact that they exist at all. Ultimately, the lighter Porsche edges out the Aston dynamically, but both are excellent machines.

Hopefully automakers take the V12 Vantage S and 911 R's success as reason to keep making manual-transmission sports cars.
