Chrysler's Upcoming Turbo V6 Could Make More Power Than the 5.7 Hemi

From Road & Track

V6 and V8 engines are usually sold alongside each other with a clear hierarchy in place: the V6s are cheaper and less powerful, while the V8s make more power and demand a higher price. Ford bucks this trend in its pickup line, where the 5.0-liter V8 is the middle-rung engine and the twin-turbo 3.5-liter EcoBoost V6 (which makes more torque) is the top spec. It looks like Fiat Chrysler will soon follow this trend, with a turbo V6 to slot above the 5.7-liter Hemi V8.

Allpar reports that FCA is working on a turbocharged Pentastar V6 with a target of 400 horsepower, five to 30 more horsepower than the current 5.7-liter Hemi V8 (depending on application). FCA will also upgrade the Pentastar V6 with direct injection, seemingly in both turbo- and non-turbo forms.

The Hemi will likely remain available in the Charger, Challenger, and Ram pickup, where a V8 is central to the car's character, though Allpar predicts that, if the turbo V6 gets better fuel mileage than the 5.7 Hemi, the V8 will come with a hefty surcharge to offset CAFE fines.

In other news, Allpar reports that FCA isn't planning any upgrades for the 707-hp Hellcat engine, at least not until the Challenger's 2018 refresh. The report theorizes that the Charger and Challenger will remain in production until 2022.

As important as the Hemi nameplate is to Mopar, it's getting increasingly challenging for FCA to keep using it in its most popular vehicles. Perhaps someday, Mopar fans will ask each other, "that thing got a turbo?"
