The Polestar 1, the first car from the former Volvo division turned stand-alone performance brand, is in the middle of its publicity tour across the globe. The car was first unveiled at a press event in Shanghai last fall, had its public debut at the Geneva auto show in March, and is making its first appearance in China this week at Auto China 2018 in Beijing. Although order books opened in March, Polestar just now announced official pricing.

The 1 hybrid coupe will cost $155,000 in the United States. That places the Polestar 1 at the high end of the coupe segment, where its closest competitor is the Mercedes-AMG S63 coupe (603 horsepower, $168,695). It also crosses into supercar territory, nestled between Audi’s R8 RWS ($141,250) and R8 V10 AWD ($167,450), both with 540 horsepower.

However, the sticker price is more of a side note to the main way Polestar will market the car. The company plans to focus on subscriptions that include insurance and maintenance-pricing for which has not been released. Potential customers can see and experience the cars in outlets called Polestar Spaces, but orders and monthly payments will all be handled digitally.

The coupe features a carbon-fiber body and is built on Volvo’s SPA platform, which also underpins the 90-series and 60-series cars. It has a turbocharged and supercharged 2.0-liter inline-four driving the front wheels and two electric motors powering the rears. The hybrid powertrain combines to make 600 horsepower and 738 lb-ft of torque. Polestar claims an all-electric range of 93 miles. When the Polestar 1 is operating in electric mode, the car is strictly rear-wheel drive.

The Polestar Production Center in Chengdu, China, where the coupes will be built, is not even complete yet. The to-do list for workers, though, is already looking hefty. According to Polestar, the company received 7000 pre-orders accompanied by refundable deposits of $2500. Deliveries are expected to begin in 2019.
