Another year, and another wild 24-hour race at the Nordschleife. This May, the victory went to Manthey Racing's Porsche 911 GT3 R, followed by a pair of Mercedes-AMG GT3s, an Aston Martin Vantage GT3, another AMG, and then two Audi R8 LMSes at positions six and seven.
Meanwhile, SCG's 003C finished 19th overall, with a fastest lap of 8:22.910 and an average speed of 84.3 mph. The Glickenhaus car also managed to beat the Renault RS01 for the SP-X class victory, as that Nissan GT-R-powered wonder crossed the line at 23rd overall.
But while a total of eight R8 LMSes entered the race with the hope of victory, Audi Sport Team WRT's sole contender's chances came to a crushing end just five and a half hours into the game.
It's not like Belgian Dries Vanthoor had a lot of options. It was dark, wet, and a car was standing on the left side of the track. Between that and the fast approaching, yet much slower Cayman GT4, there was just about enough space on this narrow track for the wide body of an R8 LMS to slip through.
Except that there wasn't, and it appeared that the minor contact with the Porsche punctured the GT3's right rear tire, making Vanthoor lose it at the next kink. And at the almost always wet Nürburgring, that's it. Mistakes put you in the barrier, in a blink of an eye. And 24 hours grants you a lot of blinking time.
