This Custom V8-Powered Two-Door E30 M3 Wagon Is Basically Perfect

From Road & Track

The original E30 M3 is an excellent choice if you're in the market for a classic sports coupe. After all, it was literally a race car that had been homologated for street use. But sadly, BMW never sold a wagon version. For an E30 M3 fan who needs a little extra cargo capacity, that's a problem. It's also why this E30 M3 wagon is so perfect.

For SEMA this year, detailing company Griot's Garage hired J-Rod & Custom to build the world's first two-door E30 M3 wagon. According to the release, the goal was to make it look like it had come right from the factory. And well, it looks like that was accomplished.

Starting with a regular E30 wagon, the stock doors were removed and replaced with nine-inch longer doors from the coupe. Once the fabrication on the body was complete, it was painted bright red.

Then, of course, the team had to find a new engine. Instead of using the 2.3 liter S14 from the original E30 M3, the M60 V8 from a 1995 540i was chosen. With a custom exhaust, Griots claims its M3 now makes more than 300 horsepower. Paired with the 540i's six-speed manual, that should be plenty of power to make this wagon a blast to drive.

To improve handling, Ground Control custom coilovers were added, along with new anti-roll bars, bigger Brembo brakes, and 17-inch gold HRE wheels wearing Azenis RT619K rubber. And because it's for SEMA, the back has been fitted with 15-gallon water tank and a hose so Griot's can use it to detail other cars.

Technically, it's not a real M3, but since an E30 M3 wagon never actually existed, we'll cut Griot's some slack. Besides, it's a V8-powered, rear-wheel-drive, two-door wagon with a six-speed manual transmission. To us, that sounds pretty much perfect.
