For the past few days, Lamborghini has been teasing the car internet with short trailer videos featuring its new hardcore Aventador SVJ at the Nurburgring. Turns out the company was building hype for a good reason: The car just broke the Nurburgring production car lap record.

The Aventador SVJ set a blistering 6:44.97 lap time around the 'Ring's Nordschelife circuit, cementing it as the fastest production car to ever lap the track. It beats out the previous record-holder, the Porsche 911 GT2 RS, by nearly three seconds, and the Huracan Performante by just over seven seconds. It's even quick enough to beat the all-electric NIO EP9, which set a 6:45 last May..

Specs for the Aventador SVJ have yet to be released, but Lamborghini has confirmed the car comes equipped with its Aerodinamica Lamborghini Attiva (ALA) active aerodynamic system. It uses flaps that open and close to alternately generate huge downforce in corners, and reduce drag on straights. ALA can also vary downforce left to right, which Lamborghini says increases cornering speed. This tech was a big reason why the Huracan Performante was able to set such a quick time last March.

Lamborghini says the SVJ has a power-to-weight ratio of 4.37 pounds per horsepower, but hasn't given exact figures. We can assume weight savings over the Aventador S and a slight power bump for its 6.5-liter V12. The steering has been retuned, too, and the suspension is now stiffer than the setup of the old Aventador SV. The standard tires are Pirelli P Zero Corsas developed for this car, while more-aggressive P Zero Trofeo Rs are optional. Unsurprisingly, the Trofeo Rs were used for the record lap.

This lap time is a full 15 seconds faster than the time Lamborghini set in the Aventador SV back in 2015. It just goes to show how much a car can be improved over time. Not, bad Lamborghini. Not bad at all.

Your turn, Porsche.
