Dan Wheldon was a two-time Indianapolis 500 winner and an IndyCar champion who died in a race just months after his second 500 win. He was survived by two sons, both of whom have now begun their racing careers and have a real shot at IndyCar opportunities of their own as their careers progress. The family's story of triumph, tragedy, and rebirth is now set to be told in a new documentary for HBO, The Lionheart.

A trailer released on social media shows that the feature will cover all of the elder Wheldon's legendary IndyCar career, the tragic circumstances of his death in a multi-car crash at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway, and the earliest days of the racing careers his two sons have since embarked upon. The trailer shows that the documentary features interviews with Wheldon's fellow Indianapolis 500 winners and former teammates, Scott Dixon and Dario Franchitti. It also features Susie Wheldon, wife of Dan and mother of both Sebastian and Oliver.

The Lionheart premiers on HBO's streaming service Max on March 12. The younger Wheldons—Sebastian and Oliver—are both set to race as Andretti Global development drivers in 2024. Oliver, a four-time karting champion across two series, will make his debut in cars when he runs in the Skip Barber Race Series. Sebastian, already a champion and a six-time winner in the Skip Barber series this past season, plans to run in USF Juniors.
