From Road & Track

The Nurburgring is one of the few tracks where literally anyone can drive whatever they want on it. If you pay the fee, you can go on the track during a tourist session in your (street legal) car, truck, motorcycle, van, pickup, etc.

That means there's always the chance of an issue, like an inexperienced driver crashing or a mechanical issue developing in a car that isn't up to track duty. An issue like an oil leak or spill. And that's an issue that impacts every car on track, not just the car it happens to.

And on the Nurburgring, it's a big problem. The track is already packed and since the drivers are varying in experience levels, they may not even realize they should be on the lookout for oil. They might not even realize what it looks like. And that leads to a really bad situation, like the two below:

So, other than the times where it happens right in front of you and there's no way to avoid it, what can you do? Keep your eyes up. Scan the track for changes in shininess, if the track is slick, it'll be shiny. Look for people on the edge of the track signaling you to slow down. And just be careful.
