Desperate Honda Tinkers With F1 Engine Ahead of British Grand Prix

From Road & Track

It's been a rough year for Honda. Its Formula 1 engine, currently used by McLaren and nobody else, doesn't make nearly enough power to be competitive. As a result, no one else wants to partner with Honda, which the team says limits its ability to improve. But that hasn't stopped it from at least trying, and Honda says it has an upgraded engine ready for this weekend's British Grand Prix.

According to Motorsport, the main changes have been to the engine's intake system. The goal is to improve combustion efficiency, which should result in a horsepower bump. Honda reportedly doesn't expect the increase to be huge, but apparently it's enough to justify spending two tokens.

And with the British Grand Prix's more traditional track layout, the team thinks its engine can be much more competitive.

"I think since we have introduced the new turbine [things have improved]," Honda F1 head Yusuke Hasegawa said. "Canada and Azerbaijan are too competitive from a power point of view. We've come back to a normal circuit and I think that is the reason why we can prove that our update was working well, I think."

We'll find out how well that update works at Silverstone on Sunday.
