Game notes: . Trying to right the ship against one of the National League's best lineups and a career Tigers-killer on the mound will make the tasker that much tougher. The last time Clevinger made a start vs. the Tigers (Sept. 2019), a gallon gas was a little more than half the price it is now and COVID-19 had not yet invaded the United States.

Clevinger, who pitched for Cleveland parts of five seasons, hasn't given up a run in his last 14 innings vs. the Tigers. He ceded one run across three starts (20 innings) in 2019 with 28 strikeouts, 17 hits allowed and two walks allowed. The big reasons for his success? Domination of Miguel Cabrera (.238 batting average and one home run over 28 at-bats) and Jeimer Candelario (.188 in 16 at-bats). Harold Castro (3-for-9), Willi Castro (2-for-5) and Victor Reyes (3-for-10) have had a bit more luck, but no homers, in smaller sample sizes. Tucker Barnhart has a home run along with two more hits vs. Clevinger, stemming from their time as in-state rivals for Cleveland and Cincinnati. Clevinger's seven starts at Comerica are his most in any road ballpark.

The series ends with a 1:10 p.m. start Wednesday before the Tigers head to Toronto. The Padres go back home but play another AL Central team, hosting the first-place Minnesota Twins for three games.
