Yahoo Autos Did You Know the Porsche 997 Targa Was a Hatchback
Did you know the 996- and 997-generation Porsche 911 Targas were hatchbacks? I did not know this.
Unlike the Targas of today, which feature a complex power top that lifts the entire rear glass piece to fold in, the 993, 996, and 997 Targas have what is essentially a massive sunroof that covers the entire top portion of the car. When activated, the glass roof folds inside and under the rear window, which seems slick but was also likely bad for tall drivers and anyone in the backseat.
While browsing for cars for sale, I stumbled on a listing for a used 2010 example that had pictures of the hatch open. That's how I learned of its existence.
It's a pretty ingenious feature, allowing drivers to access the rear seats and back storage area without having to open either door and fold the front seats forward. Why doesn't every 911 have a rear window hatch? It seems like a no-brainer. I daily-drove a Cayman for eight months, and thanks to the amount of stuff I could fit in that car's hatch, I was able to use it for pretty much anything-even camping.
