Dodge Might Build a Hemi Durango With a Shaker Hood

From Road & Track

At this year's SEMA show in Las Vegas, Dodge showed off a bright blue Durango concept called the Durango Shaker. It featured Dodge's corporate 6.4-liter V8 and a shaker-style hood scoop, as well as a three-inch lower ride height, 22-inch black wheels, and hollowed-out fog lights borrowed from the Challenger Hellcat. And while most SEMA concepts are nothing more than concepts, the Durango Shaker might actually be headed for production.

The Detroit News reports that the positive reaction to the Shaker concept has led Dodge's parent company FCA to actually consider building it. Presumably, the three rows of sports seats borrowed from the Dodge Viper wouldn't make it to production, but Dodge boss Tim Kuniskis told the Detroit News that "because of the reaction, we have decided that we should look at it. When we took it to SEMA it was never a consideration."

We've heard rumors for a while that Dodge at least has plans for a Durango SRT. Currently, the most powerful Durango you can get is the 360-horsepower Durango R/T. And while it's definitely not slow, it's a far cry from the muscle SUV that is the 475-horsepower Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT. If Dodge did commit to building a Durango SRT, adding the option for a shaker hood like it offers on the Challenger would likely be relatively simple.

Kuniskis does, however, have concerns about total sales. While he told the Detroit News that Dodge "could do it," it's still not a sure thing. "I worry about demand because SEMA attracts attention of a totally different buyer," he said. "So something that gets great attention at SEMA doesn't necessarily mean it will be a success in the general marketplace."

Hopefully, Dodge can at least find a market for the Durango SRT, if not the Durango Shaker. After all, that would be one sweet way to take the kids to soccer practice.
