The Dodge SRT-4 Is a More Serious Performance Car Than It Gets Credit For

From Road & Track

Creating a performance version of a compact sedan is nothing new. Honda's been doing it for years with the Civic Si. But in the early 2000s, it was certainly a new thing for Dodge. It wanted to get in on the tuner car craze, which meant giving the humble Neon an aggressive new look and a turbocharged engine.

The resulting car was much quicker than you'd expect from a Neon. Car and Driver hit 60 mph in 5.6 seconds, a full two seconds quicker than a regular Neon. But despite positive reviews, the SRT-4 was only made for three model years. A decade later, it still has a dedicated fanbase, but a lot of car enthusiasts tend to overlook it or forget how great it was.

As Matt Farah found out, the SRT-4 is still a serious performance car. You can't do much about the interior, but with a few modifications, it's great to drive. The owner even figured out a way to channel 400 horsepower to the ground without significant torque steer. And more importantly, it looks like he had a blast behind the wheel.

A car like the SRT-4 isn't going to be everyone's cup of tea, but that doesn't mean it isn't way better to drive than its Neon roots would suggest.
