Drive This Crazy, 503-hp, AWD VW GTI … On Your PlayStation

From Car and Driver

The Gran Turismo series has gone way beyond just a racing simulator game. With the Vision GT design series, real-life automakers dream up digital concept racers and unleash them into the hands of PlayStation gamers the world over. Some, like Chevy’s Chaparral 2X VGT, are sci-fi spaceships that couldn’t possibly turn a wheel on terra firma. Some, though, hew at least a little bit closer to reality. Here’s what VW is bringing to the party: an all-wheel-drive, 503-hp GTI you can digitally drive today-provided you’ve got a PlayStation 3.

Similar to the real-life Design Vision GTI concept that VW first rolled out in 2013, the newly unveiled GTI Supersport Vision Gran Turismo turns the practical performance hatchback into an all-out racer. The concept is powered by a front-mounted VR6 engine kicking out 503 horses and 490 lb-ft of torque, pulsing through a seven-speed DSG transmission to all four wheels.

Starting with the GTI’s roundy-box body, VW went wild with the imaginary aerodynamics. The front end’s wide-mouth air inlet makes the GTI Supersport Vision Gran Turismo look like the world’s fastest grinning jack-o-lantern, while cool flying-buttress C-pillars augment the jumbo rear spoiler. Gran Turismo’s blog goes into much further detail on the concept’s functional aero, if the bizarre exercise of reading an in-depth technical analysis of an imaginary car’s made-up science strikes your fancy.

The GTI Supersport Vision Gran Turismo joins last year’s GTI Roadster Vision Gran Turismo, an open-topped daydream machine with a similar powertrain, in VW’s Gran Turismo fantasy garage. Wanna take the new hardtop for a spin on your PS3? Starting today, you can purchase the new VW concept from the Vision GT collection on Gran Turismo 6 or, for a limited time, win the car for free after completing one lap of the new Seasonal Event.
