Elon Musk is planning to build his own town for SpaceX and The Boring Company staff to live and work, according to a recent report from The Wall Street Journal.

The publication said Musk and his associates have bought up at least 3,500 acres of land about 35 miles outside of Austin, Texas over the last few years. The billionaire plans to turn the location into a town called "Snailbrook" — a reference to The Boring Company's mascot — the Journal said, citing pictures of signs hanging from poles in the location that were posted on social media.

Musk and his employees have described the vision for the city as a "sort of Texas utopia along the Colorado River," the Journal reported, citing people familiar with the project. While Musk has overseen all purchases, Kanye West and the billionaire's ex-girlfriend, Grimes, also discussed the idea last year, the Journal reported.

The location would be near SpaceX and The Boring Company facilities, the Journal said. Insider previously reported that Musk plans to build about 110 homes, citing documents that showed the subdivision streets has already been given names, including Boring Boulevard, Cutterhead Crossing, Waterjet Way, and Porpoise Place.

The town will be outfitted with a pool, an outdoor sports area, and a gym in addition to the prefabricated homes, the Journal reported. The town may also include a small school, per the Journal. The publication said plans for the location include a private compound for Musk that would likely be located outside of the town.

Snailbrook could be part of Musk's plans to provide affordable housing for his employees. The Journal reported that Musk plans to offer the houses at cheaper prices, citing an ad for The Boring Company employees that said staff could rent two and three-bedroom houses for prices starting at $800 a month.

The billionaire has expressed concern over affordable housing in the past. In 2021, Musk issued an "urgent" plea for more housing in Austin, Texas as SpaceX and Tesla looked to fill hundreds of jobs in the area. At the time, Musk had said he planned to form a new city called Starbase at SpaceX's launch facilities in Texas, about a five-hour drive from Austin. But, while SpaceX employees have take over much of Boca Chica, Texas, it's unclear whether Musk ever fully established the city.

Spokespeople for SpaceX and The Boring Company did not respond to a request for comment from Insider. Musk also did not respond to a request for comment ahead of publication.
