The Q50 has three available engines, each of which is available with rear- or all-wheel drive. We’ve only tested the midrange engine, which is one of the Q50’s best features.

The Q50’s standard engine is a 208-hp turbocharged inline-four, similar to the base offerings in several of the Q50’s direct competitors. A 300-hp twin-turbocharged V-6 comes next, with a 360-hp hybrid rounding out the engine offerings. Each engine is paired with a seven-speed automatic transmission, and paddle shifters are optional with the V-6.

The twin-turbo V-6 is quick and reached 60 mph from a standing start in 5.0 seconds during our testing. Shifts are so smooth that they’re hard to detect, even when the driver has called them up using the steering-wheel-mounted paddle shifters. There is almost no turbo lag-the wait that sometimes exists between when you hit the gas and when power becomes available in turbocharged engines. Even better, the 3.8-second 50-to-70-mph time illustrates the effortless passing power that represents one of the V-6 Q50’s most luxurious features.
