The XE might as well be two separate cars: one that centers on high-performance driving, and another that, well, doesn’t. Guess which of those two versions is powered by the available 380-hp supercharged V-6 engine. Hint: it’s the performance-oriented S model that we ran from zero to 60 mph in 4.5 seconds.

What’s New for 2018?

The 340-hp variant of the XE’s supercharged 3.0-liter V-6 is no longer offered, replaced by two different versions of a new turbocharged 2.0-liter four-one making 247 horsepower and another cranking out 296. We sampled the former and found it to be smoother than the unrefined V-6 but lacking in moxie.

2017 Jaguar XE

Unfortunately, the goodness that the superstar V-6 brings to the XE is partially offset by the underachieving base 240-hp turbocharged four-cylinder engine (dubbed 25t in Jaguar parlance) and virtually erased by the optional 180-hp diesel four (20d). Both four-cylinders lack refinement, though the V-6 is no angel on this score, either, occasionally playing a groaning note during normal acceleration. The diesel’s responses are sleepy, and its noises are more Peterbilt than Porsche. The V-6 is at least characterful, and its soundtrack improves the harder you lean on it. Every XE uses the same eight-speed automatic transmission, which shifts well and offers paddle shifters for manual operation.
