Turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engines are the norm in this class, and the Evoque's standard unit churns out a healthy 237 horsepower; a more powerful version is optional and makes 286 horsepower. A nine-speed automatic transmission handles gearchanges; you select gears using a rotary shift knob that pops up from the center console when you start the engine.

What's New for 2018?

The biggest change for the Evoque this year is a new turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine that is offered in two different potencies-237 and 286 horsepower-but we haven't yet had the chance to test them. This engine is used in a number of other Land Rover and Jaguar products and is referred to as Ingenium. We tried it out in the Jaguar XE-where it makes slightly more horsepower-and found it to be smoother than the outgoing engine, but acceleration was merely adequate.
