Entire 2017 Ferrari Lineup Recalled for Takata Airbags

From Road & Track

On Wednesday, the U.S. Senate released a report indicating that Ferrari's entire 2017 lineup, as well as some Mercedes models, are equipped with potentially fatal Takata airbags. Senator Bill Nelson, of Florida, released a statement saying that the airbags may suffer from the now-rampant Takata inflator issue, where the propellant can degrade in high-humidity environments, potentially leading to rupture during deployment in an accident. Defective Takata airbags have been linked to hundreds of injuries and at least ten deaths.

The report states that the cars affected are subject to being recalled by the manufacturer before the end of 2018. For Ferrari, the recall includes the California T, GTC4 Lusso, 488 GTB, 488 Spider, F12 Berlinetta, and F12 TdF-every car in Ferrari's current lineup. The now-discontinued Ferrari FF is also mentioned, as some 2016 model year examples may have been built with faulty Takata inflators.

The cars from Mercedes on the list include the Sprinter van and the E-Class coupe and convertible. The report also states that both Ferrari and Daimler have plans to inform dealers and owners of impending recall activity.

According to Automotive News, out of the 17 auto manufacturers Senator Nelson has contacted, seven have admitted to selling new vehicles equipped with defective airbags from Takata.

If you're picking up a new TdF anytime soon, make sure to mark your calendars for that airbag replacement. And try to keep your car in a dry, non-humid environment. Regardless of make and model, you can determine if your vehicle is affected by a Takata airbag recall by checking the NHTSA's site here.
