When Cadillac introduced the Escala concept in the summer of 2016, it signaled a new design direction for the brand. Since that car first showed its handsome face at Pebble Beach, its styling has influenced the looks of the CT6 V-Sport and the XT4 crossover. A patent issued this week by the United States Patent and Trademark Office suggests that a new Cadillac concept-and maybe even an eventual production model-with a similar look could be on the way.

The computer-generated patent renderings show a shapely two-door with a unique rear end. The profile is somewhat reminiscent of Callaway’s Corvette AeroWagen, suggesting that this could be a sportback. The drawings show a long wheelbase with short front and rear overhangs, a long hood, and a roof that sweeps back to a rear ducktail spoiler. This is a new interpretation of the grille, which extends down from the hood rather than being a fully independent shape, while the headlamps are thin units surely lit by LEDs.

The back features equally thin, carpenter-square-esque taillights and what could be a set of quad tailpipes exiting through a bisected exhaust finisher. It’s possible, though, that the central portion of the rear bumper might be a lighting cluster rather than any sort of exhaust, which could indicate an electric powertrain. Furthermore, the doors feature camera stalks rather than traditional side mirrors, and, when viewed from the top, the body features a pinched waist, the better to emphasize the muscular fenders.

Although we won’t be sure exactly what vehicle this patent might foretell until it makes a public appearance, it’s good to know Cadillac is at least considering something sporty, and if it’s a concept, there’s not much that would need to change to turn it into production reality. It’s hard to get a sense of scale from these drawings, but the proportions point toward some variation of the Alpha platform that underpins the current Chevrolet Camaro and the future Cadillac CT3, CT4, and CT5. Whatever it is, we definitely prefer it to another crossover.
