Even Carjackers Don’t Want Android Phones

These days getting mugged and carjacked in Washington, D.C. is sadly common. But even thieves can be picky and they apparently don’t want Android phones, preferring Apple instead. Just keep that in mind the next time one of your family members or friends harasses you for not being part of the blue iMessage clan.

Secret Service car break-in story doesn’t quite add up.

A couple in the northwestern part of the D.C. area learned this firsthand when they were carjacked and robbed as the husband finished doing some Uber Eats deliveries. However, before the crooks drove off in the couple’s vehicle, they took one look at the husband’s Android phone and returned it, saying they mistook it for an iPhone. Ouch.

Thieves must be doing well these days. After all, not only were these guys being picky about phone brands, the report from KATV mentions that one of them rolled up in a black BMW. The old saying that crime doesn’t pay obviously isn’t universally true, at least in the short term.

In the meantime, the couple depends on Uber Eats delivery jobs to make it, something they can no longer do without their vehicle. Sadly, we doubt the thieves care one bit since they’re getting theirs and living large with a Bimmer.

The report makes sure to mention how D.C. Police Chief Pamela Smith said in a public hearing on the same day that carjackings in the District have drooped 7%, although over what period of time wasn’t made entirely clear. She went on to say violent crime overall is down.

The thing is we know slicing data sets certain ways can paint a preferred picture. Looking on the department’s website, as of December 6 homicides were up 32% versus in 2022, assault with a dangerous weapon was up 3%, and motor vehicle theft increased 91%. So it doesn’t really seem like crime is getting under control, despite how Chief Smith and other District leaders spin things.

D.C. leaders need to stop taking false victory laps or people like this Uber Eats couple who got carjacked will continue suffering.
