Every Trick a Master Detailer Uses to Make a Countach Better Than New

From Road & Track

Detailing is the art of bringing cars back to their factory-fresh glory, years or decades after they rolled off the line. Harry Metcalfe's 1987 Lamborghini Countach LP500 Quattrovalvole has seen its fair share of action, having crossed the Alps and so on. It's also a highly original car, which meant pro detailer Richard Tipper had to be careful not to take away any of its patina while getting it ready for a car show.

Measuring paint depth to make sure there's enough left for a polish, cleaning the engine bay with a power washer without ruining the electronics or removing the factory wax, using non acidic cleaning products like PH-neutral soap, going hardcore on dirt with a clay bar, massaging some silicone into the rubbers, and waxing the car twice for an incredibly glossy finish with a product that costs $900 a can-these are just some of the processes Richard will go through in the 15-plus hours he spends with a car. And this one was relatively clean to start with.
