The Saab 900 was launched in 1984, and by 1991, it was more than due for a casual facelift. Saab decided that the best way of grabbing the public's attention again was to introduce a five-door hatchback body, and to upgrade the turbocharged engine to a 2.3 unit with 16 valves, a cross-flow cylinder head, an intercooler and counter-rotating balancing shafts. The result?

A "whopping" 200 horsepower from the four-cylinder, with 240 foot pounds of torque for a zero-to-sixty run in 7.3 seconds. Unfortunately, with that much power came responsibility, in the name of a standard traction control system that not only worked in reverse, but could not be turned off at all.
