The Toyota 86’s key selling point is that it’s a lightweight rear-wheel-drive coupe and thus more in sync with the drift and tuning subcultures than similarly sized front-drive two-doors such as the Honda Civic or the Hyundai Veloster. The 86 successfully conveys its rear-drive layout through its long, low hood and short rear deck. Toyota sprinkles some overly aggressive creases and slashes across the bumpers and hood for extra visual excitement, as if the idea of the whole car sliding sideways weren’t already interesting enough.
What’s New for 2018?
The new GT and GT Black trims add some visual attitude via a rear spoiler painted in a matte-black finish, while passive entry provides easier access to the 86’s cabin. Stepping up to the GT Black trim paints the exterior mirror housings and spoiler-support posts black.

We’ll say it again: the 86 is significantly larger than either the Mazda MX-5 Miata or the Fiat 124 Spider, which is a boon for drivers who need interior and cargo space. The 86’s size also pays dividends on the open road, where towering full-size pickups and SUVs don’t seem as imposing as they might in the flyweight Mazda and Fiat twins.
