Exterior Design and Dimensions
Exterior Design and Dimensions Rating:
Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, and around these parts we can’t decide if the X5 is stylish or passé. Dimensionally, the X5 is more compact than rivals, but it still casts a sizable shadow.
Exterior Dimensions
It’s difficult to call something the size of the X5 compact, but in comparison with its rivals, it’s the shortest in length and also the narrowest, making it ever so slightly easier to maneuver it into tight spaces.

Exterior Features
Opinions on the X5’s styling-like that of its stablemates-is surprisingly polarized around Car and Driver’s editorial offices; some of us find it subtly handsome and quietly upscale, while others find it uninspired or dated. All models come with aluminum wheels, tasteful chrome trim, and a panoramic sunroof. The rear liftgate-which splits to create a stubby tailgate-is power operated via the key fob or by pressing the passive-entry pad located under the round BMW logo. Opting for the M Sport Design package dresses the X5 in a more aggressive outfit, deletes most of the chrome trim, and adds body-color lower cladding and bumpers.
