Yahoo Autos Extreme Jeep Wrangler Prototype Caught Testing
A stripped-out prototype of the Jeep Wrangler has been caught testing at a proving ground.
The vehicle appears to be running a new fuel-delivery system and can be seen without the stock Wrangler's windshield, rear seats, and side windows.
While it could be a forthcoming Wrangler variant with even more off-road capability, it's likely a future show car to display customization options to potential customers.
Spy photos surfaced today of a Jeep Wrangler that has been specially equipped to tackle even more serious off-road obstacles. The working concept is seen here running around a proving ground.
Most obviously, we can see that this stripped-down two-door Wrangler has no windshield, side glass, exterior mirrors, rear seats, or tailgate. Engineers riding inside were seen wearing safety goggles, likely to protect against the elements that a windshield would otherwise block.
Our spy photographer reported that the vehicle seemed to be a very early prototype, was being driven around at very low speeds, and the engine was running very roughly. Images that show the rear of the Wrangler reveal the use of a Fuel Safe Systems fuel cell, which could explain the vehicle's rough-running demeanor.
Could this be signaling a future high-performance Wrangler or Gladiator model to take on the likes of the Chevrolet Colorado ZR2 Bison or the next-generation Ford Bronco? Could be. Or it could simply be a convenient mule to test a new fuel-delivery system. Other potential explanations for this radical Wrangler could be that it's a factory-custom one-off destined for the SEMA trade show in November.
The last suggestion seems most likely, since we can also see a lifted ride height courtesy of King Off-Road suspension parts, special Sparco racing seats, and aftermarket wheels wrapped in aggressive off-road tires.
