  • On Thursday it was announced that he will stay in Formula 1 with Aston Martin through at least 2026.

  • That takes a key player out of what is expected to be a wild silly season ahead of 2025 with openings expected at several top teams.

  • Alonso described committing to Aston Martin an “easy” decision.

Fernando Alonso has committed his Formula 1 future to Aston Martin after signing a multi-year deal to remain with the team.

Alonso, 42, is the oldest driver on the current Formula 1 grid, and is the most experienced driver in history, having started 382 Grands Prix since debuting in 2001.

The Spaniard—a World Champion in 2005 and 2006 and a 32-time race winner—enjoyed a career renaissance in 2023 after switching to Aston Martin. That year, he scored eight podiums and finished fourth in the F1 Drivers’ Championship.

Alonso had indicated prior to the new campaign that he was keen to assess the early landscape of the 2024 season, and his own motivation, before deciding whether to stay in the sport.

On Thursday, it was announced that he will stay in Formula 1 with Aston Martin through at least 2026, removing a primary player from the driver market.

That means Alonso will remain at Aston Martin when new Formula 1 technical rules are introduced in 2026, which will include revisions to the engine regulations, with Honda becoming Aston Martin’s engine supplier.

Alonso described committing to Aston Martin an “easy” decision and explained that “I needed a few races or few weeks to really think about myself, if I was ready to commit for more years in Formula 1, because the calendars are just a little bit more intense now, the car as well, the commitments.
