Yahoo Autos This Ferrari 250 GTO Could Become the Most Expensive Car Ever Sold
Back in 2014, a red Ferrari 250 GTO sold for a mind-boggling $38.1 million, beating expectations by more than $8 million. Then, in February of this year, a Ferrari 335 Sport sold for $35.7 million. But neither one of those cars was remotely close to the $52 million a collector supposedly paid for a different Ferrari GTO back in 2013. That record, though, may soon be broken.
Talacrest, a British Ferrari dealer, is offering this blue and white 1962 Ferrari 250 GTO for a whopping £45 million. At current exchange rates, that works out to approximately $56 million, making it the most expensive car in the world if it ever sells. Even if you're counting in Euros, €51 is still way more than anyone has ever paid for a car.
And while $56 million is an insane amount of money to pay for a car, you're going to be hard-pressed to find another one with as impressive a pedigree. It's the second 250 GT0 ever built and the first to be used in a race. In its debut at 12 Hours of Sebring, it finished first in its class and second overall. That same year, it was entered into 24 Hours of LeMans and finished sixth overall and first in its class. The car continued to race with great success until 1965. In its final race, it competed in the Nassau Tourist Trophy where it fittingly won its class.
Speaking to the Telegraph, John Collins, the man in charge of Talacrest, called this Ferrari "the Holy Grail of classic cars." He then went on to say that "after the U.S. election, people are going to be looking at investing in assets, and this is a lot better than a painting on the wall."
Regardless of your political affiliation, you have to agree with him. After all, you can admire the beauty of a Ferrari, but you can't drive a Degas.
