From Road & Track

Ferrari follows a pattern each time it introduces a new car. First, you get the 'regular' version, which is only 'regular' by supercar standards. Then, a few years later, you get the hot rod variant. That's how it worked with the 458 and the brilliant 458 Speciale, and that's exactly what we're anticipating with this camouflaged 488 spotted on the Nurburgring.

But how, exactly, will Ferrari make the 488 more special? Will they just crank up the boost for more power? Or will they do something more?

The rumor (and yes, this is very much an unconfirmed rumor) is that the special edition 488–which could be called Speciale, GTO, Scuderia, Challenge Stradale, or another name that we haven't heard yet–will feature hybrid tech to make it quicker. Just like the LaFerrari did, but on a smaller scale.

Is this possible? Absolutely, and it's a rumor we've heard before. It would also jive with Ferrari CEO Sergio Marchionne's statement that all Ferraris sold from 2019 on will have some sort of hybrid tech.

While the special-edition 488 won't be the car that brings Ferrari's CO2 emissions to Toyota Prius levels of environmental awareness, this could be the car that gets us all used to the idea of hybrid Ferraris becoming common. And if it comes with added performance, we're a-ok with that.
