Finally, a Vintage Air-Cooled Porsche You Can Actually Afford

From Road & Track

This weekend, Silverstone Auctions will hold a big Porsche auction with all sorts of great cars from the company's long history. Given the way classic Porsche prices have skyrocketed, you probably won't find any bargains here. Except maybe this 1959 Porsche 308 N Super, a genuine, Ferdinand Porsche-designed vehicle that'll probably sell for less than $20,000.

Just like a 356 from the same era, it's got a Porsche badge and and air-cooled engine. Instead of a flat-four, though, the 308 N Super uses with a inline-three diesel producing a little under 40 horsepower. For comparison, a 1600cc 356A from the same year only produced 60 horsepower.

Interestingly, Porsche tractors weren't actually built by Porsche itself. Only companies that built tractors before and during WWII were alowed to build tractors after, so Porsche had to license its design. This model was built by Mannesmann in Germany with an engine based on Ferdinand Porsche's design. Mannesmann continued building Porsche tractors until 1963, producing 125,000 in total.

This particular tractor was found at a farm in Ireland and given a full restoration in the last two years. Silverstone estimates its value around £10,000 to £15,000 GBP ($12,000 to $18,000 USD).

It might not be a 356 Carrera, but if you showed up to a Porsche Club meeting with this 308 N Super, it'd probably be the only one there. Can you put a price on that?
