The Ford Escort ZX2 Is a Great First Car for a Budding Gearhead

From Road & Track

When the Ford ZX2 was introduced back in 2001, it had the potential to be a cool, affordable, four-cylinder performance coupe. But by the early 2000s, sporty coupes weren't nearly as popular as they'd been in the 1990s. Instead, hot hatches were the new trend. And Ford had one of those-the SVT Focus.

That meant the ZX2 always lived in the Focus's shadow, and nothing makes that more apparent than used values. ZX2s are cheap. Heck, the owner of the car in the latest Regular Car Reviews video says he bought his for $300. That's a steal for any car, especially if it's running.

Because these cars are so affordable, they're perfect for learning. Even if you don't know much about cars, you can develop and hone your at-home mechanic skills with minimal financial risk. If you want, you can move onto a nicer car a few years later. If not, the ZX2 is still cool in its own way.

The SVT-tuned Focus may be the more-memorable sporty Ford from the early 2000s, but the ZX2 definitely shouldn't be overlooked.
